Cataloging: An Introduction

Description:

This workshop introduces participants to Chapters 1 and 2 of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd ed.  Participants learn about descriptive cataloging.  Through written exercises, they practice transcribing the title, edition, publication, physical description, and series areas from books.  They also learn to construct notes and supply ISBNs where possible.

Target Audience:

Library personnel with little to no experience with original cataloging.


Prerequisites:

Cataloging: An Overview or very basic knowledge of the source of MARC records and their general structure.  The instructor assumes no specific knowledge about MARC tags and their content.

Length:

5 hours; can be adjusted to meet the needs of the workshop sponsor.

Method of Instruction:

Lecture, small group discussion, and written exercises.


Equipment Needed:

An Internet connection; instructor will provide computer and display projector.

Workshop Objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to meet the following objectives:

  • Distinguish the descriptive areas of the cataloging record from its access points.
  • Identify the tools that are necessary for cataloging.
  • Find the key sections of Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd ed., that apply to describing bibliographic items.
  • Determine chief and prescribed sources of information for each area of bibliographic description.
  • Identify the seven areas of the descriptive cataloging record.
  • Provide International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD) punctuation for the cataloging record.
  • Understand the significant rules for describing each area of bibliographic description.
