Description:

This workshop teaches the skills that are necessary to apply the MARC format to the cataloging record.  The instructor emphasizes adherence to the standards of USMARC Format for Bibliographic Data and to the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd ed.  Through written exercises, students practice supplying the appropriate MARC tags, indicators, and subfield codes to cataloging data for books.

Target Audience:

This workshop is designed for people who are familiar with descriptive cataloging rules.  Knowledge of the descriptive portions of the cataloging record (title statement through notes) as presented in Cataloging: An Introduction is assumed.


Prerequisites:

Cataloging: An Introduction or equivalent experience.

Length:

5 hours; can be adjusted to meet the needs of the workshop sponsor.

Method of Instruction:

Lecture, small group discussion, and written exercises.


Equipment Needed:

An Internet connection; instructor will provide computer and display projector.

Workshop Objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to meet the following objectives:

  • Identify the major fields which make up the MARC format.
  • Match the descriptive portion of the cataloging record to the appropriate MARC fields.
  • Supply the appropriate MARC tags, indicators, and subfields for access points.
  • Fill in the mandatory elements of the Leader and the 008 fields.
